Which district to choose to sleep in Venice?

Where to sleep in Venice? Neighborhoods and good addresses

San Marco, the ideal neighborhood to sleep in Venice?

Located on the left bank of the Grand Canal, the famous San Marco district is the most visited in Venice. If your budget allows it and if the hordes of tourists don't scare you, sleeping there appears to be a particularly wise choice. Indeed, it brings together the most emblematic monuments of the Serenissima including the square of the same name, the Doge's Palace and the Clock Tower.
The sestiere of San Marc has a wide range of 5-star hotels, including some historic ones with sumptuous decorations. You will also find establishments at more affordable prices, mainly near the Fenice theatre. However, avoid rooms that overlook noisy streets, or you risk not sleeping a night! Also prefer to get away from San Marco during the Venice carnival, which literally becomes crowded...

Castello, to sleep in Venice at low prices?

Bordered by the Grand Canal on its left bank, about fifteen minutes on foot from Saint Mark's Square, Castello is the area to be favored for sleeping in Venice for small budgets. Stretching over the entire eastern end, the largest sestiere of the City of the Doges is full of palaces, each more magnificent than the next, of churches of breathtaking beauty but also of major shipyards.
On the side of the Garibaldi shopping street, you can push the doors of the traditional bàcari to savor cicchietti, the local antipasti, after a shopping session. If you're looking for a popular place to stay away from the hustle and bustle, you'll be spoiled for choice. You will find comfortable hotels with very interesting rates, as you get away from San Marco. However, pay attention to its location: too far from the mouth, you will be isolated from everything!

Cannaregio district

Magnificent churches, luxurious palaces, the Strada Nuova which is a shopping street popular with locals: Cannaregio deserves some attention. The visit takes place in a peaceful atmosphere, in a joyful melting pot of artists and artisans. Moreover, it would be a shame not to enter the former house of the painter Tintoretto, now transformed into a painting studio! Far from the tourist circuits, this sestiere to the northwest of the Queen of the Adriatic, nestled on the left bank of the Grand Canal, is ideal for escaping the crowds. The alleys and canals are much quieter than in the city centre, which is only a stone's throw from San Marco. At nightfall, Cannaregio comes alive with night owls who join the trendy bars and restaurants with very tempting menus, particularly coveted by Venetians. This bohemian district, which was once the city's Jewish ghetto, is full of low-cost hotels and Bed and Breakfasts. The best will be to concentrate on the south and east of Cannaregio, to easily access the unmissable monuments of Venice.

San Polo and Santa Croce

If you want to sleep in Venice in an authentic setting, you will have to cross the Grand Canal to reach the right bank to the west of the city. San Polo is located just opposite San Marco and forms, with Santa Croce, a loop surrounded by water. Strolling through the labyrinth of picturesque alleys in these districts of Venice is the guarantee of immersing yourself in a contrasting atmosphere. Churches, monasteries, art galleries, sumptuous palaces, typical markets, but also artisan shops and excellent little restaurants unknown to tourists where you can taste Venetian specialties at low prices: accommodation in these places turns out to be a most pleasant experience. In San Polo, the oldest and smallest district of the Serenissima, you can admire the Rialto Bridge in particular. Santa Croce constitutes the industrial and residential west of Venice. Accommodation is very cheap there and, even if there are no major sites of interest, the charm undeniably operates. And then, if you are driving, this is the only area where you can drive.

Dorsoduro district: a good choice to sleep in Venice

Dorsoduro is the artistic and gastronomic district of Venice. Located in the south of the city on the right bank of the Grand Canal, it contains many museums, art galleries and palaces with bewitching architecture. There reigns a peaceful atmosphere, which suggests restful nights, the best being to favor the east of the sestiere, which not only adjoins San Marco but which is also more charming than its western part. You will instantly perceive an arty sophistication that appeals to even the uninitiated. The Accademia Gallery and its works by Great Masters, the contemporary style of the Punta della Dogana, without forgetting the Peggy Guggenheim Foundation where lovers of modern art meet, it is impossible to escape art ! Dorsoduro is also the workshop of the squero de San Trovaso where you can watch the gondolas being made. Nevertheless, if you want to taste Venetian and Italian specialties, the west of the district will satisfy your taste buds with restaurants offering good value for money.

Giudecca district

The island of Giudecca is separated from Dorsoduro by a 300 meter wide channel. Secretly trendy, it attracts the upscale youth as well as travelers who come to take advantage of far more affordable prices than in the other districts of Venice. Even if renowned hotels have made it their stronghold, youth hostels have made a name for themselves in order to satisfy all budgets. Although very popular, this laid-back former working-class neighborhood has the downside of being an island. You then risk being dependent on the vaporetto and wasting time by multiplying the journeys to reach the heart of the city. But if you dream of sleeping in a palace in Venice, you will have the privilege of staying in incredibly luxurious yet completely affordable hotels!

The islands of Burano and Murano

Where to sleep in Venice? Neighborhoods and good addressesIt has been more than 700 years since glassblowers settled in Murano to practice their passion in complete peace of mind. Some tourist streets can be crowded during the day, but the rest of the island enjoys absolute calm from morning to night. Lovers of solitude are therefore served! What could be more pleasant than strolling through the shady and fragrant gardens, far from the crowds? Located just 1,5 km north of the City of the Doges, Murano is also easily accessible from St. Mark's Square. Twenty-five minutes by vaporetto from there, Burano will amaze you with its houses with multicolored facades. Even more intimate and authentic than its neighboring glass roof, this island looks like a paradise for fishermen. You can sit down in small fish restaurants and eat freshly caught seafood, in the company of the locals. However, remember to book in advance, as accommodation is scarce.

Choose to sleep in Mestre

Mestre? This means nothing to you ? Mestre is a district of Venice located on the mainland unlike the historic center of Venice which is an island, although it is connected to the mainland by a bridge.
10 kilometers separate the city center of Mestre from the historic center of Venice. To reach this historic center from Mestre, you can take the ACTV public transport network. I advise you, in this case, to opt for a Venice City Pass including transport.
Why stay in Mestre? Quite simply because accommodation is (much) cheaper in Mestre than in the historic center of Venice. If your budget is limited or if you want to prioritize the quality of accommodation over location, then staying in Mestre may be a very good solution.
Transport being developed, it will be very easy for you to travel between your accommodation and the center of Venice.
