The Basque Country, the land of surfing: French coast VS Spanish coast

French coast versus Spanish coast ...

Summer is here and if it does not necessarily offer the best surfing conditions, it is nevertheless during this period that surfers from all over the world come to scour the prestigious spots of the Basque Country. Straddling France and Spain, the Basque Coast offers many spots but also striking landscapes and a lively nightlife all summer long.

Surf in 64 !

It was in Biarritz that the first French surfers launched the movement in Europe after having imported surfing from the USA. However, the interest of Biarritz spots is often limited except in heavy weather, especially since they are very popular in summer by swimmers. For a first contact with Basque surfing, Anglet seems to be better indicated.

Located just north of Biarritz, the beaches of Anglet offer several famous places such as the Barre or the Chambre d'Amour. Beginners and confirmed riders will find their happiness there.

For thrills, it is better to descend a little further south towards Guéthary. This small Basque village is home to two of the best spots in France: Parlementia and Avalanche. The surf conditions are ideal and the waves can reach 6 meters! But beware of rocks very close to the surface, unfriendly to beginners ...

If most of the surf spots in the Basque country are of great beauty, one of the most famous is that of Les Jumeaux in Hendaye. It is the ideal place for a sunset and a night vigil on the beach ...

Spanish side: surf and tapas

The Spanish coast also offers superb surfing conditions. It is Mundaka which often collects the most votes. Located on the Guernica estuary, this powerful station wagon is on a protected site. by Unesco and displays great conditions. A session on this spot dominated by the village church is an unforgettable moment.

A good level is required, especially since the spot is at the exit of the estuary and the currents are violent. If you are in the region, it would be a shame not to get in the water near Meniakoz or Sopelana, two famous places and more accessible than Mundaka.

What about the days without waves?

The Basque Country is full of places, each more beautiful than the next. The villages of Ainhoa and Espelette will make you taste all the authenticity of a rich terroir. Rather want a surf shopping?

Biarritz lists many surf shops where you will have a large choice of swimsuits that cannot be found elsewhere. And after a good surf session, what better than to have a drink in a trendy but welcoming place like the Ventilo Café in Biarritz or the Marinella café in Ciboure which regularly hosts very good dj's.

So, are you ready to heat up the wax?
