The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary

    Marvel at over 1 colorful tropical butterflies at Australia's Butterfly Sanctuary. Located in the heart of Kuranda, the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is Australia's largest butterfly sanctuary. Stroll through the beautiful gardens that replicate the rainforest while hundreds of butterflies fly around you. Free tours run throughout the day, and a 'behind the scenes' tour of the lab is also included with admission.

    Explore the tropical aviary where beautifully colored butterflies fly freely. Admire the magnificent electric blue butterfly Ulysses, or the green and yellow Cairns Birdwing. The sanctuary is home to over 1 butterflies, all of which were hand-raised here.
    Visit the lab to learn about the reproductive cycle, see how butterfly eggs are removed and cleaned, and how caterpillars are raised by hand before becoming beautiful butterflies. The museum displays many different species from all over the world. Don't forget to see the moth exhibit, home to the Hercules moth with a wingspan of up to 14 inches (36 cm).
