A label hoisted high!

Having become a reference for all holidaymakers, the Blue Flag is an eco-label born in 1985 at the initiative of the Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe. He rewards the environmental policy of coastal areas and inland waters. Supported by the UNWTO and the UN, the Blue Flag counts a little more each year in the tourism landscape in France, but also in the world.

Conditions of attribution

The Blue Flag can be assigned to a municipality by the seaside or at a marina. This is why in 2008, the city of Cassis lost the label, but kept the one attributed to its port. A municipality only keeps its label for one year. If she wants to keep it, she must run again the following year.

To obtain the Blue Flag, municipalities must first apply themselves. At the same time, the implementation of a global environmental policy aimed at meeting the various mandatory criteria for obtaining the label is launched. Listed in a sustainable development approach, the municipality's environmental policy must strictly follow the recommendations issued each year by the national jury. Thus, this jury is particularly sensitive to the mode of waste management, water quality and protection of aquatic fauna. The personal initiatives of the municipalities such as improving the reception of disabled people are also welcome.

Very positive results

Hoisting the Blue Flag flag on a beach is therefore a long-term job that needs to be prepared and maintained throughout the year. Because if this whole journey seems long and tedious, it is nevertheless worth it. Indeed, a study shows that 80% of French people prefer to spend a holiday in a city benefiting from the Blue Flag.

But the Pavillon Bleu label aims to cross French borders and become a global standard for the quality of the beaches and marinas. The United Nations is supporting this project as well as the World Tourism Organization. The stake for seaside resorts is therefore essential, because the label is becoming essential for European holidaymakers in their choice of a destination by the water. At a time when French resorts are suffering from increasingly fierce competition from countries like Croatia, their salvation may come from their ability to meet the challenge of environmental quality.

The very rewarding image that it guarantees to its owners also has an impact on the dynamism and therefore the frequentation of the stations concerned. Thus, beyond the assurance of a protected and enhanced environment, these certified municipalities provide the opportunity to practice varied and high-quality nautical activities, other strong expectations of holidaymakers.

By receiving the Blue Flag label, the municipalities undertake to create actions to promote and raise awareness about water. They bring together many local or departmental associations.

The next plans?

In this period of awareness of the need for sustainable tourism, we are increasingly sensitive to the efforts of resorts to protect and improve our environment. But in this era of globalization, a challenge awaits the Blue Flag label: to impose its rules on far-flung destinations in France such as in Africa or Asia ...
