Just 80 km from Paris, bordered by the forest of Orleans, Loiret is a fairly secret department with multiple charms. From Montargis to Pithiviers, the Routard presents its Getaways in the Loiret in a new guide available in bookstores. Something to feast on, between beautiful local products, rich heritage and generous nature where roses bloom!
From Montargis to Pithiviers, getaways to do yourself good
First of all, it is a destination of choice for foodies. The Gâtinais, Pithiverais and the Beauce form a rich agricultural region, with many farms where you can get good products, but also a land that gives pride of place to culture and heritage.
You will find, here and there, churches, castles, unusual museums but also magnificent gardens on the Route of roses. The Loiret indeed has some nice surprises in store for nature lovers. The Orleans forest, with its 35 hectares, is quite simply the largest national forest in France: more than 000 animal and plant species thrive there, and numerous paths, roads and alleys invite to discover on foot, on horseback or by bike, the charm of this forest. Meet at the top of Caillettes belvedere for a breathtaking view of the forest.
The territory is also famous for its production of roses and its many remarkable gardens, such as the André Eve's secret garden in Pithiviers, a key stage of the Route des roses. This virtuoso rose grower to whom we owe many roses, has created several exceptional gardens, which can be visited with passionate volunteers.
History and architecture lovers will also find their happiness here! Crossed by an ancient Roman road, the territory has 2 major Gallo-Roman sites: the amphitheater of Chenevières in Montbouy and the former spa town of Aquis Segeste in Sceaux-du-Gâtinais.
The villages of Gâtinais and Pithiverais have very often kept their wash houses, fountains and halls as well as churches, with their "caquetoires", the finest examples of which are found in Prefontaines and Chanterelles.
Beautiful fortresses are worth a visit: the castle of Mez-le-Maréchal in Dordives, that of Yèvre-le-Châtel or even that of Chamerolles where we will take the time to follow the intoxicating promenade of perfumes. Do not miss the Franco-Chinese Friendship Museum to Montargis which recalls a little-known page of relations between China and France, and the brand new and gigantic Printing workshop-museum in Malesherbes. Exciting.
For a gourmet break, succumb to pithiviers, the emblematic pastry of the city of the same name and to the famous Gâtinais honey. So many beautiful products to take home with a rosebush, another beautiful memory from Loiret.

The favorites of the actress Christine Citti, godmother of the guide, who lived in the Pithiverais and comes back regularly to the region ...
"There is a place that I discovered not so long ago that has become a place that I love: thearboretum des Grandes Bruyères. I find it a place of beauty, of poetry… It is magnificent. We can walk, linger to read ... My children love to go to the beach of the Vallée pond (in Combreux), a place where they go a lot with my grandchildren. There is also lots of walks to do: the forest, the wheat route… I find that there is a lot going on in the region. There is the Mixed Syndicate of the Egg, Rimarde and Essonne which undertakes a lot of things. I can't wait to see when all these places will hatch, open up. "
