Medicines and consultations
- Preservation in drugstores like Walgreens, Duane Reade, CVS or Rite Aid (some are open 24 hours a day). If you are looking for Doliprane, the most common trade name is Tylenol (paracetamol is called acetaminophen).
You will find the contact details of the doctors, tab "Clinics" or "Physicians and surgeons". Please note: private consultations are very expensive!
Be careful with ticks in wooded areas, you will be able to help you with a third party for hard-to-reach areas such as the scalp, back ... In case of doubt, see a doctor quickly, who will prescribe an antibiotic treatment of at least 3 weeks.
In the western half of the country, various diseases, of which rodents are the reservoir of germs and insects the transmitting agents, are present, mainly in national parks. This is the case with pulmonary syndrome hantavirus, rare but dangerous, present in Yosemite Park. This virus, carried by the saliva, stool and urine of animals (especially mice), can be caught by breathing dust where it has passed.
The virus at West Nile, and its formidable complication, encephalitis, is transmitted by mosquitoes very common and widespread everywhere. Anyway, from May until the beginning of winter, it is advisable to protect oneself against mosquito bites throughout the country (skin repellents with 50% DEET, impregnation of clothes or even mosquito nets), because even if they are not all disease vectors, they sometimes spoil the trip! Remember to take effective repellents in your luggage (for example Insect Ecran which exists in a cutaneous version but also as a soaking solution for clothes. Much more expensive on site than in France.
No vaccine required (mouse) is recommended for any prolonged stay in rural areas or in contact with animals.
There is a difference betweentranquil atmosphere of resorts like Santa Barbara, Monterey, Carmel (or even cities like San Francisco) and Los Angeles. The first, on a very human scale, have to deal with the problems that can arise anywhere, so nothing very particular to fear, except pickpockets in the most touristic sites; and all the same, too, some somewhat murky neighborhoods to avoid at night in San Francisco: the Tenderloin (west of Union Square, a homeless neighborhood plagued by drugs and quite sordid), as well as the south of Mission and some corners of SoMa. (around Market St).
In Los Angeles
This is an other story : if the Downtown, in full renaissance, sheltered) books, and junkies (drug addicts).
Also watch out for red light districts in which minorities live, i.e. all neighborhoods along Interstate 110 (Harbor Freeway) south of Downtown, in particular Watts, Compton et Inglewood, and this, to the port of San Pedro. Also in LA, certain areas, which seem particularly pleasant during the day, can change their face radically after dark. This is the case for the boardwalk and the beach at Venice. If the "fauna" that lives there (or survives there) seems nice during the day, it can be much less fun at night (again, drug and aggression problems). In Los Angeles, everything is facade and superficiality, and the Promised Land has not kept its promises for everyone. The relaxed lifestyle should not make you forget to be on your guard.
Do not hesitate to question the receptionist of your hotel. In principle, he knows his subject. If he advises you to take a taxi to a bar or concert hall a little out of the way, follow his recommendations.
If everbaux (tickets) are part of the annoyances, then be super vigilant on the rules governing the parking, particularly in Los Angeles.
- Finally, in an emergency, dial u 911.
In national parks
The only real risks are to come across an ill-esteemed grizzly bear, recklessly leaving the marked trails. Venturing into Yosemite Park, for example, requires a minimum of preparation and precautions.
And beware of bears who will not hesitate to help themselves in your tent and even in your car! It is also forbidden to leave food there at night.
In Death Valley it's the extreme heat which represents the major risk. Here too, the basic rules of common sense and respect for the advice given by the rangers are essential.
- Be sure to service are sometimes very far from each other ...
- In case of urgent problem, dial 911 (free from any public telephone; no need to introduce coins).
