Highlights

Known as the Diamonds of the Saronic Gulf, the Spetses are located at the entrance to the Saronic Gulf very close to the Peloponnese mainland.

The island was used as a setting for novelist John Fowles' book "The Mage" in 1965, mainly due to the warmth of the islands and the seductive scent of the pine forest.

Spetses retains much of the grandeur and old-world elegance of its heyday as an important shipbuilding, trading and maritime centre. The main town is dotted with 200 year old mansions with cobbled mosaic courtyards. They were mainly built by wealthy sea captains and merchants of many successes who made their fortunes launching the British blockade during the Napoleonic Wars.

The Spetses Museum is definitely worth seeing, and houses the mansion of the famous Spetses heroine, the 19th-19th century maritime Amazon Lascarina Bouboulina. The old port is also a place to see to admire the many fishing boats and yachts.

The coast of Spetses is dotted with many coves with small pine-shaded beaches to relax and enjoy the sun.
